Sara Mayhew
Sara qualified as a solicitor in 2004 after training with a Scottish law firm, Maclay Muarray and Spens (now part of Dentons), in London before leaving later in 2004 to take up an in-house role with one of its client’s, Schlumberger. She enjoyed her time training in London but was delighted to re-locate to the glamour of Gatwick Airport where her new employer was based!
While working for Schlumberger, an oil and gas services company, she was initially – for about 18 months – involved with supply chain management and with Fleet and Marine Operations before spending almost 4 years as Marine Counsel overseeing all legal aspects of a global fleet of specialist marine research vessels for one of its upstream seismic companies, Westerngeco. This was challenging work that involved much travel as well as many fantastic opportunities to meet and work with people from all over the world. Sara credits this industry experience as giving her a solid commercial approach and, as a purchaser of legal services, a great understanding of what client’s want/need.
Sara later sought a better work-life balance and, in 2010, set up her own employment law business in the UK, initially providing advice and representation to those bringing claims in the employment tribunals and later going on to provide consultancy services to two nationwide of law firms. Sara immensely enjoys the freedom and breadth of work that this approach affords and is always staggered to realise she has now been practicing law for almost 18 years!
When Sara’s not dispensing sage advice, she spends her time either ferrying her 14-year-old daughter from one water-polo competition to another (long suffering parents unite!) or walking one very badly behaved Patterdale terrier (yes, county of Cumbria, she holds you completely responsible!).
